确切地说,这是一本关于元数据仓储的书,而不是关于我们通常认识的“资源描述元数据”的介绍。其目的不是为用户更好地检索利用信息而描述资源,而是为优化管理,从而达到优化企业运作、实现企业目标而建立元数据仓储。用的词也有所不同:Meta Data而不是Metadata。

而且,这也是一本向企业介绍元数据仓储有什么用和如何做的书,其设定的读者对象为:Business Users, IT Managers, Developers, Project Sponsors。当然,这类企业是以数据立足、数据管理作为其关键应用和核心竞争力。例如像淘宝,点评网,物流企业等。

这本书从内容、编排体例方面充分考虑了商务应用的需要,逻辑清晰,特别针对企业信息管理中漠视元数据管理,以及对于元数据的误解进行了论述,对策也具有很强的操作性,感觉应该作为CIO培训的很好的教材,因为从企业的宏观数据管理方面,给了一个很好的框架和思考坐标参考。

这是Diane编的书!简直如雷贯耳。虽然只是编的,然而汇总了20多位元数据领域的先行者的研究,还有Diane Hillmann掌舵,绝对是元数据专题值得认真学习的一本书。

当然毕竟老了点。2004年元数据方法中不少东西还没有定型,例如抽象模型还没有严格定义,新加坡框架还没有提出,知识本体的概念还很朦胧,语义技术的应用初露端倪…,这是一本前沿的、素材丰富的、提出问题的价值大于提供答案的,元数据研究必备的一本著作。

提出一系列的问题,然后按照问题很理性地安排篇章内容,是一种很好的著作方式。然而对于非教科书来说,这样组织内容有个问题,就是重点和亮点不突出。一个作者,很难在某个问题的所有方面都是专家,于是会冲淡了作者的创见。但是总的来说,这本书也是由于属于这个主题写作年代较早的著作,可参考的内容还是很多的,起码作为一个阶段性的总结和成果,涉猎全面,框架合理,成为这个话题必备的参考书。不足在于:蜻蜓点水,各方面论述的都过于浅显,像是尝新之作,反映了我们这个专业进行研究的一个特点。

而且该书的另一个特点,将数字保存的重点定位于“数据”,而不是文献。这种考虑与当下Data Curation,以及Linked Data运动实际上异曲同工,不能不说作者一开始就很敏锐地找到了问题的这个症结:数字对象的基本单位,不再是我们强调的所谓“电子书”、“数字期刊”等传统形态的遗产,而直接是“数据”。至于“数据”、“信息”、“知识”抑或“语义”之类概念的区别与联系,并不是本书的论题,作者并不是单纯为我们这个行业写这部著作,不在讨论之列也情有可原。

对于商务领域如何利用元数据进行信息组织,一直充满好奇。这是一个目的性非常明确、尤其强调实用的领域,科学性经常让位于实用性,考察这个领域的元数据应用,应该能给我们以“知识组织”立足的理性主义学派带来一些实用主义新风。

然而可能由于年代的关系(出版于1999年,metadata刚刚从数据库的襁褓中脱胎,浑身上下还插着各种芯片,捆绑着不少线缆,图情界和计算机界还无法和谐对话),这本书似乎还不足以让我们实现上述目的。作为从计算机技术角度审视元数据应用的著作,本书仅仅把元数据定位于系统管理的一种工具,而没有作为资源描述的基本方法(就是说更多的是关注元数据的“管理型功能”,而不是对于语义描述的“描述型功能”。同时,本书在技术细节“怎样做”方面论述也不多,大多是“是什么”。

值得一提的是,其对于元数据方案设计的思路却是我们这几年同样经历的,只不过该书的方法论局限于商业领域,可算是一个元数据的“领域应用”吧。例如,它更关注“元模型metamodel”的架构,实际上提供了一个商务系统运作的信息模型(角色、流程、相关实体、关系、作用等等)。
